Karnofsky >= 50% for patients > 16 years of age and Lansky >= 50 for patients =< 16 years of age; patients who are unable to walk because of paralysis, but who are up in a wheelchair, will be considered ambulatory for the purpose of assessing the performance score
Patients should have a life expectancy of at least 12 months and a Karnofsky or Lansky performance score of >= 50; patients who are wheelchair bound because of paralysis should be considered “ambulatory” when they are up in their wheel chair
Subjects who are unable to walk because of paralysis, but who are upright in a wheel chair will be considered ambulatory for the purpose of calculating the performance score
Performance status: Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) 0, 1 or 2, or for children =< 10 years of age, Lansky >= 60; note: patients who are unable to walk because of paralysis, but who are up in a wheelchair, will be considered ambulatory for the purpose of assessing the performance score
RECURRENT/ PROGRESSIVE DIPG (STRATUM 1): Karnofsky performance scale (KPS for > 16 years of age) or Lansky performance score (LPS for =< 16 years of age) assessed within 7 days of enrollment must be >= 50%; patients who are unable to walk because of neurologic deficits, but who are up in a wheelchair, will be considered ambulatory for the purpose of assessing the performance score
NON-PROGRESSED DIPG (STRATUM 2): Karnofsky performance scale (KPS for > 16 years of age) or Lansky performance score (LPS for =< 16 years of age) assessed within 7 days of enrollment must be >= 50%; patients who are unable to walk because of neurologic deficits, but who are up in a wheelchair, will be considered ambulatory for the purpose of assessing the performance score

Patients > 16 years of age must have a Karnofsky performance level of >= 70%, and children =< 16 years old must have a Lansky performance of >= 70%; patients who are wheelchair bound because of paralysis secondary to a plexiform neurofibroma should be considered ambulatory when they are up in their wheelchair; similarly, patients with limited mobility secondary to need for mechanical support (such as an airway PN requiring tracheostomy or continuous positive airway pressure [CPAP]) will also be considered ambulatory for the purpose of the study
